Counseling Psychologist is someone who assess and evaluate individuals' problems through the use of case history, interview, and observation and provide individual or group counseling services to assist individuals in achieving more effective personal, social, educational, and vocational development and adjustment. Counselling Psychologists help people to cope with mental health issues, emotional problems and challenging situations using a range of psychological concepts and psychotherapeutic techniques, such as transactional analysis, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and the Milan systemic approach. Rather than simply offering guidance, counselling psychologists encourage service users to make their own decisions. They assist people by offering them a structured and focused way of addressing their problems.

Counselling Psychologists help people with all kinds of difficulties, from substance abuse and domestic violence to post-traumatic stress and eating disorders. As well as talking to people and helping them deal with their problems, counselling psychologists are responsible for assessing service users’ needs using psychometric tests and clinical interviews. Based on these assessments, counselling psychologists will then create a bespoke therapy plan for the individual service user.

Counselling Psychologists are also responsible for maintaining records, tracking the progress of service users, and writing reports.

Work Environment

  • Counseling Psychologists can work in a private practice setting, an outpatient facility, or in a hospital setting. The workplace of counseling psychologists depends upon the type of clients a practitioner chooses to serve. Counseling psychologists work in a variety of settings, providing various services to different client populations. Some are employed in colleges and universities as teachers, researchers and service providers (e.g., in university counseling centers). Others work in independent practice, providing counseling, assessment and consultation services to individuals, couples, families and organizations. Still others work in community mental health centers, VA hospitals and other medical facilities, health maintenance organizations, rehabilitation agencies, and business and industrial organizations. Businesses and corporations may hire counseling psychologists for consultation services as well. Public health facilities also employ counseling psychologists to oversee the vocational coordination of the facility's services in addition to coordinating group-orientated psychotherapy.
