How To Become a Pediatrician

“A Pediatrician is children’s specialists who diagnoses and treats injuries, dysfunctions, malignancies, infections, genetic defects and organic diseases.” They perform many of the same tasks as a general physician, such as recording medical history, ordering diagnostic tests if needed, recommending treatment plans and addressing other health concerns. Pediatricians are physicians who are specialize in diagnosing, treating and preventing diseases and injuries in young children, teenagers and young adults. They monitor their patients' growth and development from infancy to young adulthood and usually provide routine healthcare treatments, such as physical examinations, immunizations and prescriptions for antibiotics to treat bacterial infections. Pediatricians can specialize in pediatric surgery or other fields to best treat their young patients.

These professionals need a lot of patience and must listen to their young patients' needs in order to adequately diagnose their symptoms. They must communicate effectively with children and their guardians in order to find the cause of the children's discomfort or illness and provide immediate, effective treatment. Pediatricians also provide healthcare advice to their patients, counseling on topics such as teen birth control, obesity problems, eating disorders and sex education. The duties of Pediatricians typically includes to primary is providing quality healthcare for infants, children and adolescents. Not only do examining young patients and diagnose and treat their injuries and illnesses, they also monitor their development over the years to ensure proper physical and mental growth.

Due to the nature of this role, you must develop your interpersonal skills so that you can communicate effectively with children and their guardians in order to determine the source of their discomfort or pain and select the proper treatment.

Additional responsibilities include obtaining and documenting patient medical history, discussing exam results with patients and guardians, and counseling patients on proper diet, nutrition, hygiene and lifestyle.


Work Environment

  • Pediatricians can work in a number of environments, such as hospitals, private practice offices, health maintenance organizations, community health centers, public health clinics, schools, or the military and government. In a typical setting, pediatricians enjoy a pleasant working environment as they are generally assigned to offices and examination rooms most amenable to children. Offices and rooms are equipped with children's books, toys and activities to occupy children during waiting periods and distract them when undergoing painful procedures.
