Steps to Become a Dentist:

Step-1

Complete an undergraduate degree, typically in a science-related field, to meet dental school prerequisites.

Step-2

Take and score well on the DAT to qualify for dental school admission.

Step-3

Enroll in a dental school to complete a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) program, usually lasting four years.

Step-4

Pass the National Board Dental Examinations and any required state or regional clinical exams to become a licensed dentist.

Step-5

If pursuing a specialty, complete an additional residency program in that field.

Step-6

Work as an associate dentist or in other dental positions to build practical experience.

Eligibility Must possess at least 50% aggregate from a recognized institution (PUC/CBSE/ICSE/ISC, etc.)
Educational Background High school diploma or equivalent.
Undergraduate Degree Basic qualification: B.Sc, BDS, or a Diploma in a related field.
Postgraduate Degree MSc or MDS in Dentistry recommended for advanced learning and specialization.
Entrance Exams A valid score is needed in exams such as INI CET, AIPGDEE, NEET MDS, and NEET.

  • Minimum 50% aggregate in 12th grade from any recognized board (PUC, CBSE, ICSE, ISC). Cut-offs vary by college.
  • Valid score in Entrance exams after 12th like INI CET, AIPGDEE, NEET MDS, NEET. Some colleges have their own exams, and state-specific exams are also available.
  • Must have a B.Sc, BDS, or Diploma in a related field.
  • A relevant Master’s degree can enhance career prospects and learning.

  • MSc or MDS in Dentistry can be advantageous for advanced opportunities.

Tasks to perform as a Dentist:

To assess oral hygiene, identify infections or anomalies, and prepare suitable procedures, inspect jaws, teeth, and associated tissues with dental devices, x-rays, or other medical equipment.

Confirm the diagnosis and cure of infections, fractures, and deformities of the teeth, gums, and associated dental systems, as well as offer preventative maintenance care.
