Career as an Automobile Design Engineer



Automobile Designers combine knowledge of physics with aesthetics to create cars that appeal to the eye while being safe, energy efficient, and fun to drive. Automotive design is a competitive career that attracts many who love cars, trucks, and vans, but one which requires top-level talent to train for and then to apply for. It specifically deals with the designing of cars, operations in production of cars, designing of engines and fuel management. Thus, automobile engineering can be considered as a sub branch of automotive engineering in this context. Automobile Design Engineers create or improve motor vehicle bodies, parts and accessories. Automobile design engineering is a combination of art and science; a strong aesthetic sense is needed, as well as a solid grounding in the engineering and materials involved in building cars and their component parts.

Work Environment



The design and development stage in automobile industry usually involves working regular office hours, while testing and building the first concept car or model may involve working extra hours from time to time, irrespective of the time or day of the week. Workspaces will include work tables for sketching, meeting rooms with whiteboards for brainstorming, and computer tables for preparing designs. Sometimes, designers will travel to design centers, testing facilities, client’s workplaces, and manufacturing plants. In addition, since many automobile factories and manufacturing plants are overseas, design engineers may often travel abroad to meet with factory personnel during the design process.

Bachelor Degree in relevant fields includes Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Design and Automotive Design.
