How To Become a Polymer Engineer

Polymer Engineers work in the realm of developing or testing plastics or related equipment and processes. A bachelor's degree in a related major is necessary. These engineers may develop new polymers, manage a lab, manage projects and processes, or design equipment. Polymer Engineers work primarily in the field of plastics development. They may help develop new plastics or assist in the testing and evaluation of products. Polymer engineers may be expected to maintain a laboratory or oversee other employees in working on a product or process. Polymer Engineers may work in areas that include the development of new polymers, equipment design for polymer processing, project engineering and process management. Assembling and managing a laboratory, testing or evaluating products, coordinating studies, designing new substances and optimizing processes are all common facets of a polymer engineer's job.

Polymer Engineers may work in many fields, including thermoplastics (polymers that change state from liquid to solid based on temperature) or elastomers (flexible polymers that are often used as seals, gaskets or adhesives). Polymer engineers may seek advancement by becoming technical specialists or by entering management and sales.

Work Environment

  • Polymer Engineers work mostly in the offices of government departments, private research institutions, universities or non-profit organisations. They usually work regular business hours, but may be expected to work longer hours to ensure deadlines are met. Polymer Engineers may be expected to travel to attend conferences or to research political systems or situations taking place interstate or internationally. Polymer Engineers usually require direct access to those involved in the political system, such as parliamentarians, as well as to the media.

Responsibilities

  • Design new materials as per customer requirements and manage communication with all suppliers to design new compounds and maintain expert knowledge on same.
  • Analyze and recommend improvements to all materials to increase efficiency of all polymer processes and collaborate with process engineering team to forecast requirements.
  • Design and recommend innovative improvements to all processes and monitor all competitor activities and determine all quality specifications for all new materials.
  • Provide support to all business units and provide support to all plastic injection molding techniques.
  • Monitor all customer issues and assist to identify and resolve issues effectively and assist senior staff to develop resolution for all issues.
  • Maintain all product improvement policies and promote efficient and safe lab operations to resolve same and ensure adherence to all site safety regulations.
  • Coordinate senior development engineer to implement all new products and provide support to all new applications conduct various laboratory studies to analyze all data and prepare technical reports.
