Career as a Remote Sensing Scientist and Technologist
Remote Sensing Scientists and Technologists apply remote sensing principles and methods to analyze data and solve problems in areas such as natural resource management, urban planning, or homeland security. May develop new sensor systems, analytical techniques, or new applications for existing systems. They analyze data acquired from aircraft, satellites, or ground-based platforms, using statistical analysis software, image analysis software, or Geographic Information Systems (GIS). They manage or analyze data obtained from remote sensing systems to obtain meaningful results. They Process aerial or satellite imagery to create products such as land cover maps and develop or build databases for remote sensing or related geospatial project information. They also monitor quality of remote sensing data collection operations to determine if procedural or equipment changes are necessary. Teams usually work together and discuss project goals and collect information. Teams are also constantly trying to design new ways to present the data they collect efficiently and clearly, as their audience consists mostly of superiors who do not understand the technology and equipment that they work with. They may also be dispatched occasionally to collect data in the field when needed. Remote sensing technicians also direct all activities related to remote sensing, and may briefly train other teammates on how to use certain equipment. All operations are usually overseen by a remote sensing scientist or a remote sensing analyst.
