Career as a SAP Consultant


SAP Consultants analyze, design, and configure new computer software and systems in accordance with their employers’ or clients’ specifications, as well as write programs such as forms, specifications, and interfaces. They also test new interfaces to ensure that system workflows are optimized and interact with end-users to make changes as requested and obtain feedback. SAP is clever software that empowers organisations and individuals to work together more efficiently and to be more effective in employing business insights that help companies to stay ahead of the competition. SAP consultants may have a variety of roles depending on the sector in which they are operating. For example, enterprise resource planning (ERP) and customer relationship marketing (CRM) in the telecoms sector require consultants who are technical specialists, and who therefore have significant experience of the SAP ICM suite covering configuration, design and implementation, migration and technical support. SAP, the company, develops business software to help with Enterprise Resource Planning or ERP. Due to the massive uptake of SAP software there are several options of where they can work as a SAP expert. There are a wealth of SAP contract jobs available, so there is the option of working for yourself and becoming a contractor, however they could work for a consultancy that installs or manages SAP software for its clients, or even go to work for SAP directly. The duties of SAP Consultants includes to design, build, test and deploy SAP technical solutions. Plan, deliver and supervise system configuration and documentation tasks. They also solve complex business problems in the areas of finance, operations, human capital, customer, and governance, risk and compliance, using SAP technologies.

  • Like most IT employees, SAP administrators work in an office environment. They spend long hours sitting and often travel to other offices. Those in this position must be patient and flexible, as end-users regularly revise system requirements. They also perform data transfers from non-SAP systems to SAP and customize clients’ and employers’ systems in accordance with their system requirements. They generally test for all system errors to ensure total system integration, and they generally work under senior SAP consultants. Flexibility is important, as they may be required to travel or relocate to other places within or outside of the United States. All SAP consultants should constantly improve and update their technological skills by attending various workshops and classes at local colleges or universities and reading relevant journals.
