Career as a Civil Engineer

Civil engineering is an engineering degree that deals with the discipline of providing new designs, repairs or altering structures, maintaining artificially and naturally built. Many of them include roads, runways, ship harbors, airports, skyscrapers, dams, etc. They consist of several sub-disciplines, taking after military engineering, which is said to be one of the oldest disciplines in engineering. Civil engineers are responsible for much more than the design of buildings and bridges. They design commercial airliners and aircraft structures for the aerospace sector. They're used in the automobile industry to calculate a chassis' load-carrying capability and improve bumper and door collision resilience. They operate in the shipyard business, the power sector, and a variety of other businesses that require built infrastructure.

  • Must possess at least 50% aggregate from a recognized institution in 12th, from any board PUC/CBSE/ICSE/ISC, etc. However, the cut-off margin varies with the selection process of different colleges.
  • Should procure a valid score in entrance exams such as JEE-Main, KIITEE, SRMJEE, CEE, HITSEE, CET, etc., Different colleges offer their own entrance exams if you don’t have a satisfactory score in JEE or other competitive exams – colleges like NMIMS, Symbiosis International University, XUB, Andhra University, LPU, etc. Every state offers their own entrance exam as well.
  • One must earn a degree in B.Sc/B.Tech or a Diploma to become a Civil Engineer. This is a basic qualification you must require to enroll in this line of work.
  • An M.Tech in Civil Engineering can also prove to be helpful while looking for a higher degree and better learning.

  • Reviewing and understanding the blueprints and specifications determined in the structure or the requirements that need to be met.
  • Create a detailed diagram or sketch of the designs and layouts required to maintain conformation towards the specification of the design.
  • Converse with supervisors to receive intricate details about the project. Details such as assembly, test clearance and formidable conditions in the field.
  • Preparation of reports, technical manuals, documents, etc., to provide accurate data.
  • Develop cost estimations and plans to cover the materials for construction, system installation, suitability of the workers, utilizing different facilities to ensure efficiency.

Once you procure the required qualifications for becoming a Civil Engineer, myriads of options are open to you. There are multiple projects you can undertake throughout this line of work, and there are many other fields you can branch out to as well.

  • Civil Designer: Civil Designers provide and use computer-aided designs, also known as CAD programs to create, draw and provide sketches, drawings and plans with high accuracy to assist in the construction of large-scale projects. This may also include highways, bridges, skyscrapers, city redesigns, airport runways, etc.
  • Design technician: Design technicians are mainly employed for assisting engineers in various steps that are involved in design. They are involved in collecting and interpreting data, ideas presented in research, running difficult functions and equations, estimation of cost, developing models and reviewing facts and reports.
  • Structural Engineer: Structural engineers prioritize creating designs and assisting in the construction of buildings and infrastructures that are considered safe and has the ability to cope with harsh elements of the environment. They also provide structural balance to other buildings.
  • Marine Engineers: Marine engineers those technicians that specialize in the technical aspects of design, inspection of equipment, ensuring stable functioning of engines, installation of different machinery, and other machines that perform in water. These people work on many marine machinery such as cargo ships, warships, submarines, other military vessels, merchant ships, etc.
  • Engineering Technician: Engineering technicians are initially trained in honing skills and methods that pertain towards a specific field of engineering, after having a clear understanding of their particular subject. Engineering technicians are often given the role of assisting engineers and other individuals in the common field in relation to research, or indulge in operation or their implementation.
